Apricot Kernel

Nutritional Benefits

The apricot has health-building properties. The fresh fruit is rich in easily-digestible natural sugars, vitamins A and C, riboflavin (B2)niacin (B3) and an excellent source of minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, iron and traces of sodium, sulphur, manganese, cobalt and bromine. Apricots are often dried, cooked into pastry or eaten as jam. Although the calories in apricots increase when dried, the amount of calcium, phosphorus and iron also increase significantly. The beta-carotene and lycopene in this golden fruit helps protect LDL cholesterol from oxidation, which in turn helps prevent heart disease. The apricot seed is a nut that is rich in protein and fat and has a very high content of vitamin B17 which is known as Laetrile. Daily consumption of this seed is claimed to be highly effective in preventing cancer. Cancer patients on Laetrile Cancer Therapy have reported that their tumors have shrunk with high doses of vitamin B17. These bitter seeds may be chopped up or ground and swallowed with a teaspoon of honey. The fruit, kernel (inner softer part of the seed), oil and flowers of the apricot have been used in medicine and medical treatment from ancient days.

Health Benefits

• The kernel yields an oil that is similar to that of the almond and is widely used as sedatives and provides anti-spasmodic relief for strained muscles. It is also used for healing of wounds, expelling worms and as a general health tonic.

• High iron content in apricot makes it an excellent food for anemia sufferers. The small but essential amount of copper in the fruit aids iron absorbtion in the body. Liberal consumption of apricot can increase the production of hemoglobin in the body. This is ideal for women after their menstrual cycle, especially those with heavy flow.

• Apricots can be used in the treatment of constipation because the cellulose and pectin found in this fruit acts as a gentle laxative. The insoluble cellulose acts as roughage and the pectin absorbs and retains water, adding bulk to stools. This facilitates smooth bowel movement.

• Take an apricot before meal to aid digestion, as it has an alkaline reaction after digestion.

• The high amount of vitamin A in dried apricots can improve or maintain good eyesight. Defficiency in this vitamin can cause night blindness.

• Blend honey and apricots with mineral water and drink to cool down fever. It also quenches thirst and effectively eliminates the waste products from the body.

• Juice fresh apricot leaves and apply on scabies, eczema ,sun-burn or skin itchiness for a cool, soothing feeling.

Black Beans are a wonderful source of dietary fiber, known to naturally help lower cholesterol. In addition, the high fiber content in Black Beans helps keep blood sugar levels from rising too rapidly after a meal-a wise meal choice for people with diabetes, insulin resistance or hypoglycemia. When Black Beans are prepared with whole grains such as barley or wild rice, the Black Beans provide a virtually fat-free, high quality source of protein. But that's not all. Recent research also shows that Black Beans are rich in antioxidants as well. Antioxidants destroy free radicals, and when eaten regularly, may protect against heart disease, cancer and aging.Black Beans contain greater antioxidants, gram for gram, than other beans, followed by red, brown, yellow and white beans, in that order. In general, darker colored seed coats were associated with higher levels of flavonoids, and therefore higher antioxidant activity. Studies have found that the levels of anthocyanins per 100 gm serving size of black beans was about 10 times the amount of overall antioxidants in an equivalent serving size of oranges and similar to the amount found in an equivalent serving size of grapes, apples and cranberries.

Black Rice

Black rice gets its dark color from the presence of flavonoid pigments known as anthocyanins, and have strong antioxidant properties. Anthocyanins are the same pigments that gives berries such as blackberries, dark cherries, and raspberries their rich color and health benefits. Anthyocyanins are being studied for their role in preventing a variety of chronic diseases including cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. Much of their benefits are from their anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.Black Rice prevents heart attack, is a good source of minerals, including iron, and fiber. Although its nutritional profile is somewhat similar to brown rice, the presence of anthyocyanins gives it a nutritional edge over brown rice.

Dang Gui

Dang gui (Angelica sinensis [Latin]), also called Chinese angelica, is highly respected in Traditional Chinese Medicine, second only to ginseng. Commonly used in the treatment of women’s reproductive health issues and in the prevention and treatment of some forms of cardiovascular disease.

Dang gui roots contain phytoestrogens, which are chemicals found in plants that mimic the effects of estrogen in the body. Dang gui is said to help balance women’s hormone levels, both restraining and supplementing the body’s production of estrogen as needed. It is used to treat menstrual and menopausal symptoms, including migraine, cramps, mood fluctuations, and hot flashes. It is also said to help speed a woman’s recovery from childbirth and symptoms of low energy/chronic fatigue.

Dang gui helps relax the smooth muscles throughout the body, which makes it a potential treatment for a variety of illnesses. Not only does dang gui relax the smooth muscles of the uterus, but it also keeps the smooth muscles in the arteries dilated and regulates blood flow and heartbeat. Dang gui has been used to treat angina, high blood pressure, and irregular heartbeat. Some studies have shown that the antispasmodic, dilating effects of dang gui may help treat chronic pulmonary hypertension in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), especially when taken in combination with the drug nifedipine.

Dang gui contains phytochemicals that help boost white blood cell production and fight inflammation, and may improve liver and kidney function. It is traditionally used to treat inflammatory diseases such as arthritis, and is currently being studied for its ability to prevent or treat cancer, liver and kidney disease.

Gastrodia Elata

Gastrodin is a major bioactive component in Tianma (Gastrodia elata Bl.)and has sedative, anticonvulsive and neuro-protective effects.

Zhou BH, Li XJ, Liu M, Wu Z, Ming Hu X from The Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University, China, claimed hydroalcoholic extracts of Gastrodia elata possessed, an anti-depressant effects on mice in a study. In another study, researchers from Zhejiang University, China, injected gastrodin into the femoral vein in a rat and found that within a short time gastrodin was distributed in its brain with a greater concentration at the cerebellum than other parts of the brain.

Korean researchers examined the antioxidant effect of the ether fraction of the methanol extract of Gastrodia elata along with its major constituents vanillin, vanillyl alcohol, hydroxybenzaldehyde and hydroxybenzyl alcohol. They found the order of antioxidation potency as follows: hydroxybenzyl alcohol, vanillyl alcohol, vanillin and hydroxybenzaldehyde. They suggested Gastrodia elata may benefit people suffering from lipid peroxidation- associated neurological disease.

Researchers from Chung-Ang University, Korea, demonstrated the anti-inflammatory action of phenolic compounds extracted from Gastrodia elata root. Another group of Korean researchers demonstrated the potential anti-cancer activities of Gastrodia elata Blume extracts by a wound assay and an invasion assay. The mechanism probably involves a GTP-Ras-dependent pathway.

Ding CS, Shen YS, Li G, Wei Z, Wei F. from Anhui University, China, found that polysaccharide 2-1 from Gastrodia elata (PGE2-1) prolonged clotting time and bleeding time, and increased the bleeding capacity (A540) in a study of mice. Thus, it may have anti-coagulating and anti-thrombosis activities.

Japanese researchers from Chiba University showed that gastrol, together with 10 known phenolic compounds, has been isolated from a methanol extract of the rhizomes of Gastrodia elata Blume (Orchidaceae) could relax smooth muscle preparations isolated from guinea-pig ileum. While Chinese researchers from Chang Gung Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital and Chang Gung University showed that Gastrodia elata could reduce shakes, paw tremor and facial myoclonia in kainic acid -treated rats. Thus, Gastrodia elata has anticonvulsive activities.

Ginkgo Nuts

Traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine use ginkgo as an astringent for heart, lungs, as well as to treat asthma, bronchitis, wheezing, cough, etc. It is used to regulate urinary frequency and the treatment of diarrhea, gonorrhea, toothache, skin diseases, fever and other ailments and as a digestive aid.

Ginkgo contains antioxidants which neutralizises free radicals and destroys them. Free radicals cause damage to the human body. It can alter cell membranes and DNA structures and sometimes even cause death. Free radicals are present in the environment from cigarette smoke and various pollutants, etc,. These free radicals may cause cancers, cardiac ailments, and in some cases Alzheimer’s disease.

The gingko seeds or nuts also have medicinal and other benefits. Fresh and nutritious ginkgo seeds or"nut" have, for many years, been used in Chinese medicine for asthma, bronchitis, cough with thick phlegm, urinary incontinence, as a digestive aid etc

The cooked seeds are said to stabilize the production of sperm, while the raw seeds may have anticancer and counter-vinous activity.

Goji Berry

Goji berry is a sweet-tasting, dark-red colored fruit, this fruit has extraordinary healing properties that most people don't know about. It is considered as the world's most nutrient-dense food. For over 2,000 years Goji has proven to improve many health conditions and cure ailments. Goji is said to contain more vitamin C than oranges, more beta-carotene than carrots, and more iron than steak.

It is a common practice in Chinese medicine to prescribe it to treat liver, kidney, or eye diseases, along with other herbs. Many Chinese people consume goji berries in their day-to-day lives because they believe that red colored berry can keep them healthy, young, and energetic. Goji berries can be eaten raw, drank as goji juice, or as herbal tea (e.g. with Chrysanthemum), eaten with yogurt, and cereal etc.

Green Tea

The Chinese have known about the medicinal benefits of green tea since ancient times, using it to treat everything from headaches to depression. In her book Green Tea: The Natural Secret for a Healthier Life, Nadine Taylor states that green tea has been used as medicine in China for almost 4,000 years.

Health Benefits:

• Contains rich quantities of Vitamin A, B, C and E.

• Excellent source of calcium, iron and potassium. It is also widely used for weight reduction

• Widely used as food replacement for reducing weight in many slimming programs because of its low fat content.

• Rich source of protein and fiber which is necessary to lower high cholesterol levels in the blood.

• High fiber content yields complex carbohydrates that aid digestion. These carbohydrates not only stabilize blood sugar levels but prevent its rapid rise, after a meal and maintains the body’s energy at a balanced level. Regular consumption of mung bean is recommended for those who suffer from diabetes or high cholesterol. • cardiovascular disease

• infection

• impaired immune function

What makes green tea so special?

Green tea is rich in catechin polyphenols, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). EGCG is a powerful anti-oxidant. Besides inhibiting the growth of cancer cells, it kills cancer cells without harming healthy tissue. It has also been effective in lowering LDL cholesterol levels, and inhibiting the abnormal formation of blood clots. The latter takes on added importance when you consider that thrombosis (the formation of abnormal blood clots) is the leading cause of heart attacks and stroke.

For years, researchers were puzzled by the "French Paradox". Despite consuming a diet rich in fat, the French have a lower incidence of heart disease compared to the Americans. The answer was found to lie in red wine, which contains resveratrol, a polyphenol that limits the negative effects of smoking and a fatty diet. In a 1997 study, researchers from the University of Kansas determined that EGCG is twice as powerful as resveratrol, which may explain why the rate of heart disease among Japanese men is quite low, even though approximately seventy-five percent are smokers.

Why don't other Chinese teas have similar health-giving properties?

Green, oolong, and black teas all come from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. What sets green tea apart is the way it is processed. Green tea leaves are steamed, which prevents the EGCG compound from being oxidized. Black and oolong tea leaves are made from fermented leaves, which results in the EGCG being converted into other compounds that are not nearly as effective in preventing and fighting various diseases.

Other Benefits:

New evidence is emerging that green tea can even help dieters. In November 1999, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published the results of a study at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. Researchers found that men who were given a combination of caffeine and green tea extract, burned more calories than those given only caffeine or a placebo.

Green tea can even help prevent tooth decay! Just as its bacteria-destroying abilities can help prevent food poisoning, it can also kill the bacteria that causes dental plaque. Meanwhile, skin preparations containing green tea - from deodorants to creams - are starting to appear on the market.

Hawthorn

Hawthorn also known as whitethorn and mayflower is small tree, with thorny branches, that grows to about 9 meters. It produces pretty white flowers and vibrant red berries. The flowers on some varieties smell like rotting meat and has long been associated with bad luck and death because the crown of thorns that Christ wore at the Crucifixion is widely believed to have been woven from hawthorn twigs. Although there are about 280 known species of hawthorn, medicinal extracts are obtained only from a spiny shrub native to the northern wooded temperate zones of eastern North America and Europe. This herb, historically used both as a diuretic and as a treatment for kidney and bladder stones, is presently one of the most widely prescribed heart remedies in Europe.

Chemical composition: Hawthorn's health benefits are due to the active flavonoid compounds found in its leaves, berries and blossoms, particularly anthocyanidins and proanthocyanidins. These flavonoids are powerful antioxidants and are responsible for the red-to-blue colors found in hawthorn berries and also blackberries, cherries, blueberries and grapes.

Health Benefits:

• Hawthorn is considered a potent tonic for the heart. This herb directly benefits the heart function by dilating blood vessels and increasing the the blood flow. It also improves its pumping ability. These powerful cardiac effects can probably be traced to its abundant supply of plant compounds called flavonoids - especially procyanidolic oligomers (PCOs) - which act as potent antioxidants.

• Hawthorn also seems to block enzymes that weaken the heart muscle, thereby strengthening its pumping power. This property is especially useful for people with mild congestive heart failure, who don't require strong heart medications. It can also correct irregular heartbeat (cardiac arrhythmia). Moreover, the anti-oxidant properties of hawthorn may help to protect against damage associated with the build up of plaque in the coronary arteries. Clinical trials have also found benefits in the elderly with no heart conditions but simply deteriorating heart function with age.

Lotus seeds can enhance memory, improve work efficiency and can prevent the occurrence of senile dementia. The bitter tasting Lotus Heart can aid peripheral vascular disease and lower blood pressure.

Millets

Health benefits:

• Gluten- free. These gluten free grains can are ideal for those suffering from Celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. It can be used used to make breads, muffins, and pizza crust.

• Rich in Fiber - both soluble and insoluble for heart and digestive health.

• More digestable than other whole grains. It acts as a prebiotic in the digestive system and keeps the intestine and the immune system healthy.

• Rich in Important Minerals such as manganese and magnesium. Magesium is particularly important for maintaining a healthy heart and blood pressure. Magnesium deficiency is more common now that the quantities found in the soil have declined. A cup of millet provides a quarter of the day’s magnesium requirements.

• Better Sleep. Millet is also a good source of tryptophan, a precursor to serotonin, a brain neurotransmitter important for peaceful sleep.

Oats

Health benefits:

• Nutrient-rich
Oats are a good source of magnesium, selenium, manganese and phosphorous. Oats are also a good source of vitamin B1 and dietary fiber. The protein in oats is almost equivalent to the quality of soy protein, and combined with the dietary fiber, makes it the ideal food to start the day with.

• Reduces Cholesterol
Oats has become popular as healthy food due to its dietary fiber being high in beta-glucan, which helps to lower cholesterol. In individuals with high cholesterol levels, consumption of the equivalent of 3 grams of soluble oat fiber per day lowers cholesterol by 8% to 23%.

• Aids Diabetes
Cereal grains are digested very slowly, producing only a gradual rise in the level of sugar in the blood. As a result, the body needs less insulin to control blood sugar after eating plain, unadorned cereal grains than after eating some other high-carbohydrate foods such as bread or potato. In studies at the University of Kentucky, a diet developed by the University of Toronto comprising whole-grain, bean, vegetable, and fruits, was given to patients with Type 1 diabetes (do not produce insulin) and it was found that their daily insulin requirement was reduced by 38%. This diet is recommended by the American Diabetes Association.

• A study of adults with type 2 diabetes who consumed foods high in oat fiber, experienced a much lower rise in blood sugar than other participants who ate rice or bread. The beta-glucan in oats increases the viscosity of the contents of the stomach, thereby slowing down digestion and prolonging the absorption of carbohydrates into the bloodstream.

• Cardiovascular Disease Prevention
A reduction in serum cholesterol levels decreases the risk of developing heart disease.

• Weight Loss
In another study at Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, it was determined that consumption of whole grains may contribute to favorable metabolic alterations that may reduce long-term weight gain.

• Atherosclerosis Prevention

• Avenanthramides are phenolic antioxidants, which are present in oats, and have the potential to reduce plaque build in the artery walls, and may contribute to the prevention of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries).

Peanuts

Health benefits:

• Whole peanuts contains high amount of protein, which makes it a preferred diet for people engaged in body-building and those people who are weak and underweight. The raw peanut butter with crushed skin contains much higher amounts of nutrient than refined "nut-only" butter.

• Peanut is a good source of Coenzyme Q10 which protects the heart during the period of lack of oxygen example high altitudes and clogged arteries.

• Peanuts contain high concentrations of antioxidant polyphenols, primarily a compound called p-coumaric acid. Roasting peanuts increases its p- coumaric acid levels, boosting it overall antioxidant content by as much as 22%. Roasted peanuts rival the antioxidant content of blackberries and strawberries, and are far richer in antioxidants than apples, carrots or beets.

• Unsalted peanuts are good for your arteries. One quarter cup of peanuts contains as much monunsaturated fat as a tablespoon of olive oil. Monounsaturated fats have been shown to lower blood cholesterol.

• Peanuts' high niacin content helps in the recovery of cell damage provides protection against Alzheimer's disease and age-related cognitive problem.

• Peanut contain vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant that is shown to significantly reduce the risk of cancer and cardiovascular diseases.

• Peanut contain iron which is essential for the correct functioning of red blood cells.

• Peanut is rich in calcium which helps promotes healthy bones.

• Peanut has higher bioflavonoid resveratrol content than grapes. This bioflavonoid is believed to improve blood flow in the brain by as much as 30%, thus greatly reducing the risk of stroke. Study showed that by adding even small amounts of peanut products to the diet can reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol by 14%.

• Peanuts' fiber content helps lower the risk of colon cancer, an ounce of peanuts contains 2 grams of fiber.

• Peanut helps to accelerate the growth of male and female hormones.

Pine Nuts

He Shou Wu is considered one of the most important Chinese herbal tonics. It is believed to restore vitality and virility by strengthening the liver, reproductive, urinary and circulatory systems.

The tuberous roots and the stems have antibacterial, anticholesterolemic, antispasmodic, astringent, cardiotonic, demulcent, depurative, hypoglycaemic, laxative, sedative and tonic properties.

The roots are taken internally in the treatment of menstrual and menopausal complaints, constipation in the elderly, swollen lymph glands and high cholesterol levels. They are very effective in reducing high cholesterol levels in the blood and increasing blood sugar levels. Applied topically the roots are used to treat ringworm, bleeding wounds and sores.

The leaves and roots tonify the liver and kidneys, fortify the blood, strengthen the muscles and prevent premature greying of the hair. The stem has deobstruent and sedative properties. It is taken internally in the treatment of insomnia and neurasthenia. Extracts of the plant have shown antipyretic, antitumour, hypoglycaemic and sedative activity.

Ho Shou Wu is considered a dietary supplement similar to vitamins and, as such, it is not regulated by the FDA.

Constituents of Ho Shou Wu
Ho Shou Wu contains stilbene glycosides similar to resveratrol but with superior antioxidant activity. Resveratrol has been suggested to extend lifespan by a variety of mechanisms. Anthraquinones, polydatin, 2, 3, 5, 4'-tetrahydroxy stilbene-2-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside, arbutin, and resveratrol are found in Ho Shou Wu. Anthraquinones in Ho Shou Wu include physcion, emodin, and questin. Other substances in the herb include chrysophanol, rhein, polygonimitin B and gallic acid.

Ho Shou Wu contains several derivatives of tetrahydroxystilbene that are antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds investigated for their effects on neurons. Ho Shou Wu also contains the laxative compound emodin and a number of derivatives of emodin; this accounts for a potential adverse effect of the herb in causing loose stools when consumed in quantity.

Several published human clinical studies have supported the traditional uses of Ho Shou Wu. While results vary among studies and individuals, over 60% of people who had hair loss (alopecia) experienced hair regrowth within 3 months after taking He Shou Wu. In animal studies using an aging mouse model, He Shou Wu was demonstrated to lower total cholesterol and triglyceride, to reduce brain pathological changes and promote learning and memory (1,2,3, 4).

One cup cooked kidney beans contains over 15 gm of protein and 5 mg of iron--close to 30 percent of your daily requirement for each nutrient!

Beans are famous for their fiber content, and a cup of cooked kidney beans provides almost half of your daily fiber. Fiber does more than just keep you regular. The soluable fiber found in red beans also helps lower your blood cholesterol levels by helping to push cholesterol through your digestive track before your body can absorb it. The high fiber content of red beans means that they are digested very slowly, putting them low on the glycemic index and making them a healthy choice for diabetics or for anyone looking to stabilize their blood sugar levels.

Red beans have one of the highest antioxidant rating of all foods. Researchers at the United States Department of Agriculture surveyed 100 different foods, and found that small red beans and kidney beans came out at the top of the list, surpassing the antioxidant qualities of cultivated blueberries, cranberries and cherries. Antioxidants are necessary to protect your cells from the damaging effects of free radicals, which in turn may reduce your risk of cancer, heart disease and other illnesses.

Asian women consuming a traditional diet have fewer menopausal hot flashes and night sweats compared to Western women.

The isoflavones genistein and diadzein present in soya beans are phytoestrogens. These naturally occurring plant compounds have been shown to have a balancing effect on hormones; increasing estrogen levels when they are low and reducing them when they are high. Note that these isoflavones must be converted to active compounds by the gut bacteria before the body can use them. Soya also contains other substances, which have cancer-fighting properties studies have shown that soya can lower cholesterol levels (especially the 'bad' cholesterol).

Walnuts

Walnuts are a rich source of the omega-3, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), improve artery function after a high fat meal and may be even more important in a Mediterranean-type diet than olive oil in promoting heart health.

Walnuts contain significant amounts of polyunsaturated fatty acids, specifically alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an essential plant-based omega-3. They also provide antioxidants and L-arginine, components identified in past studies as potential nutrients that improve artery function.

Walnuts have often been thought of as a "brain food," not only because of the wrinkled brain-like appearance of their shells, but because of their high concentration of omega-3 fats.

Alpha linolenic acid, the omega-3 fat found in walnuts, promotes bone health by helping to prevent excessive bone turnover-when consumption of foods rich in this omega-3 fat results in a lower ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fats in the diet.

Although nuts are known to provide a variety of cardio-protective benefits, many avoid them for fear of weight gain. A prospective study published in the journal Obesity shows such fears are groundless. In fact, people who eat nuts at least twice a week are much less likely to gain weight than those who almost never eat nuts.

Walnuts are a very good source of manganese and a good source of copper, two minerals that are essential cofactors in a number of enzymes important in antioxidant defenses. For example, the key oxidative enzyme superoxide dismutase, which disarms free radicals produced within cell cytoplasm and the mitochondria (the energy production factories within our cells) requires both copper and manganese.

Walnuts also contain an antioxidant compound called ellagic acid, which blocks the metabolic pathways that can lead to cancer. Ellagic acid not only helps protect healthy cells from free radical damage, but also helps detoxify potential cancer-causing substances and helps prevent cancer cells from replicating.

Ziziphus Jujub (Suan Zao Ren)

Suan Zao Ren is a frequently used herb when it comes to treatment of insomnia in Chinese medicine. It contains two kinds of triterpenoid compounds - Betulin and Betulinic acid. The other ingredients are Jujuboside, Jujubogenin, fatty oil, protein, sitosterol and vitamin C etc.

Health benefits:
Soothes the mind, nourishes the heart and stops sweat. The tests shows sedative and hypnotic effects on the central nervous system.

Clinical use of Suan Zao Ren:
• Neurasthenia
• Forgetfulness
• More dreams and easy to wake up
• Eating less
• Fatigue

Modern research of the natural herbs for insomnia – Suan Zao Ren

1. The animal experiments proved that Suan zao ren inhibits the central nervous system, presents sedative and hypnotic effects and no-toxic-effect reaction. But the sedative effect would be lost after Suan zao ren has been fried for a long time and the oil inside disappeared. There is no excitatory effect on rats in raw Suan zao ren.

2 According to ancient prescriptions and theories, both raw and prepared Suan zao ren can work as natural herbs for insomnia. Clinical practice has proved that the efficacy of these raw or prepared natural herbs is not opposite. According to TCM theory, it makes sense that prepared Suan zao ren should be used in warming method and raw Suan zao ren should be used in clearing method.

3. The experimental results on animals and humans show that both raw and prepared Suan zao ren have the same role and efficacy. There is no difference and no opposite effect of waking up between them. The sedative and hypnotic effects may be related to its soluble substances such as sugar and jujube acid etc. There is no sedative and hypnotic effects found in its extract of ether or chloroform. So we can make a conclusion that there are different functions between Suan zao ren’s kernel and pulp. But it does not necessarily mean that opposite effect would occur after Suan zao ren is prepared. To save the procedure of preparation, raw Suan zao ren is recommended.

4. Over the years, a lot of clinical practice show that prepared Suan zao ren is one of very important natural herbs for insomnia treatment. But we think that both raw and prepared Suan zao ren can be used clinically. It depends on the clinical needs and should not be determined mechanically to use only one of them.

5. The animal experiments and clinical observations show that both raw and prepared Suan zao ren have sedative and hypnotic effects. But analysis of its ingredients shows that Suan zao ren should not be prepared. The prepared Suan zao ren is easy to be eaten by moth and goes bad. Else the prepared Suan zao ren is easy to break. Compared with the prepared one, the storage and custody of raw Suan zao ren seems much easier. The different functions between raw and prepared Suan zao ren, as a matter of fact, is mixed with that between Suan zao ren’s kernel and pulp. To save the procedure of preparation, raw Suan zao ren is recommended.

6. The results show that Suan zao ren is one of significant natural herbs for insomnia. Both the Suan zao ren decoction and powder have a certain short-term sedative and hypnotic efficacy with no obvious side effects. Animal experiments show that water-soluble extract from Suan zao ren has a certain sedative and hypnotic efficacy on the central nervous system. Both raw and prepared Suan zao ren have the same effect.

7. The comparison of chromatography and sub threshold dose of barbiturate between raw and prepared Suan zao ren show that there is little difference on sedative hypnotic effect. Paper chromatography also shows there is insignificant difference between them. So we can come to the conclusion that raw Suan zao ren can be used directly.

8. Both raw and prepared Suan zao ren are very good natural herbs for insomnia. And Suan zao ren, which is fried slightly, will be easier to extract the useful ingredients. Clinically, raw Suan zao ren should be used in the syndrome of palpitation and insomnia, caused by deficient heat of liver and gall. Prepared Suan zao ren should be used in the patients with syndrome of palpitation and insomnia, caused by both deficiency of heart and spleen, especially with the symptoms of abnormal sweating due to general debility, and indigestion because weak spleen and stomach.
